How to find the right niche for your blogging career?

So, you’ve decided to start off on your career as a blogger – Congratulations! Writing for yourself, rather than ghost blogging can be a very rewarding career. But have you decided on your niche yet?

By niche, I’m referring to the topic, or subject area, of your blog. Why is it important to focus on a niche? That’s because it becomes easier to develop a community online and market your blog to the targeted audience.

For example, if you want to blog about backpacking, you need to target younger adults, students, and so on. If it’s beauty, then you can target women of different ages.

Often, writers are undecided about this; you may want to write on several different subjects. If you are interested in different things and have the requisite knowledge or experience or both, you can also choose to start a personal blog.

Here you can create a few categories, like say, travel, food, health and wellness, parenting, etc. Make sure that each blog can be put into one of the categories above.

Monetizing a niche blog is way easier compared to a personal blog, but it can be done, and once you gain popularity, you can expect to earn very well indeed.

Alright, now that’s out of the way, let’s talk about zeroing in on a niche. How will you decide which topic you want to blog about? Here are a few tips:

  • Choose something that you love!: If you’re passionate about food and cooking, then it’s the perfect niche for you. When you write about something that you truly love and enjoy doing, your words will flow and ring true, and your readers will be able to connect with you.

You will sound authoritative on the subject, and more convincing. For example, if you’re a yoga teacher with years of experience, writing about yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, and so on is ideal.

As you have the knowledge and experience with all of the above, your content will be valuable to anyone who reads.

So, it’s important that you have a passion for the topic that you’re going to write – and you also have the knowledge or experience.

You can also learn along the way, and write about your learning experience – it’s not completely necessary that you have all the knowledge before you start.

  • Check for monetization potential: Not all niches are easy to monetize. D-I-Y, food and cooking, parenting, healthcare, legal, finance, insurance, – these are niches that are pretty profitable and have the potential to generate better leads.

In all of these niches, the reader can do one of the things: save money, make money, or learn something very valuable.

One of the topics that people actively search for is the scope of a career in digital marketing as it’s an in-demand career path. This worldwide boom in Digital marketing career availability has led to countless internet searches.

Similarly, thousands of parents are clueless about several aspects of parenting, and are looking for good, sound advice; today we have become pretty health-conscious as a society; we’d like to know about our rights in civil matters – and so on.

Such niches will always find innumerable eager readers, and a large audience means ease of monetization. Once you start getting good traffic, you can have an AdSense account and start earning money from advertising on your blog site.

You can also check the revenue potential by looking at other bloggers in the niche and checking their revenues, the affiliate programs that are available, and so on.

  • The demand for the topic: You can easily determine this with a Google search. While it’s important to choose a niche that has good demand, if the competition is too high, and there are a few major players already blogging about it, odds are, you won’t be able to make money off it.

Trending Searches as per Google Trends

On the other hand, you may not have any competition at all, but that’s probably because hardly anyone is looking for such information.

It would be wise to choose the middle path – it should have fair competition because that indicates that there are a good number of people demanding that particular information.

  • Check for the long term: If you want to make a profit out of the blogs you write, then you need to plan for the long run.

Study if the niche will be relevant for the years to come. Choosing a topic that is hot currently may not always be a bright idea.

For example, the current generation has no idea, and no interest in knowing about elections that happened 10 years ago – so if you have a blog about elections, it should be about elections in general, the process, and so on – not only about one specific election.

That has no scope for survival in the long term.

If you are multi-talented and have many different passions, as well as knowledge and experience with all of them, you can have multiple blogs.

Nothing to stop you from doing so! However, you need to be prepared to shell out money for maintaining all the websites, including hosting charges, promotions through targeted ads, and so on.

Initially, you will need to invest – once they become successful and you monetize them, then you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Conclusion

By and large, you need to strike a balance between all of these – I know, it’s easier said than done!

Let’s sum it up: You need to think about what you love; think about what you’re good at, know well, or have good experience in; you need to scope out the competition; check if it has money-making potential, and make a study into if it will survive the next few years.

Whatever the reason you start a blog – you may want to get noticed, make your views known, share your experiences, give something of value, or simply be occupied productively.

Ultimately, all of us who write, want to make some earnings from it, to monetize our blogs

Therefore it is essential that you cautiously step into this after studying all the above factors carefully, rather than plunging into it headlong without proper thought.
