How to do Affiliate Marketing via Email
Hey, I’m Michael Culp, a business Master’s Student, and a blog owner. Today, I’m going to teach you how to do affiliate marketing via email. Before we start, why email?
Quick Links
It’s simple, according to Hubspot email generates $42 dollars for every $1 dollar spent. It’s a pretty impressive ROI.
Now that you know the profitability of email, let’s get into the step-by-step.
1 – Choose your email provider
The first step is to choose an email delivery platform to send your emails automatically and store all your contacts. There are a lot of good options in the market, but it’s very important that you check if your favorite provider allows affiliate links in the emails.
Make sure to check their guidelines before you choose one. You don’t want to start building your list to discover later on that they don’t allow affiliate links.
2 – Start building your list
Now that you have your email provider, you need to start building your list. The first step is to create a lead magnet. A lead magnet is a great piece of content that you’ll offer in exchange for your prospect’s email address.
Yes, just like a bribe haha
Your lead magnet can be anything that solves a problem for your audience. It can be a cheat sheet, a checklist, a quiz, a video training…
The next step after creating your lead magnet is to have a space on your website in which you’ll capture the emails. You can put it into the sidebar, at the end of each piece of content, and even as a pop-up form.
If you don’t have a website and want to e learn step-by-step, how to start one, you can check out my full guide by clicking here.
3 – Build an automated sequence
Most people who are building their email list don’t have the discipline to send emails with a good frequency
Let’s be honest here, it’s kind of hard, right? Sitting down to write emails every day or every other day…
So, how can you possibly make money via email, if you’re not sending emails to your list?
With automation, you’ll build an email sequence that every email address that you collect will receive. Instead of having to email out every single person, you create a sequence, and you are able to put people into the sequence as soon as they subscribe.
When you heard people saying, I make money while I sleep. This is what they are talking about. They have an automation that will send emails over a long period of time.
To start building your automation you don’t need to get overwhelmed. Just build a basic sequence of 1 week, or 2 weeks to give you some buffer and continue to build the sequence over time. As long as you stay ahead of the first emails that were added they will be always getting every email.
Start by building your first week of email, then, you’ll need to be consistent over a couple of months. After a couple of months, you’ll have a whole sequence ready to go and everyone who subscribes to your list will start to receive it automatically.
In that way, all the marketing that you do, will not be wasted. Every email you write is going to become part of the sequence.
4 – Choose the right products
To have automation you need to choose evergreen offers. It will not work if you are promoting product launches that will be open for two weeks and then go away.
You need to choose products that exist now, that will exist 6 months from now, and that will exists a year from now. In that way, the affiliate programs will continue.
5 – Plan your promotional calendar
It’s very important to create relationships before selling. Your first few emails shouldn’t sell to your customers. The first emails should have the goal of relationship building.
It should help your customer understand who you are, and why they should trust you. So, in a week when you start to sell something they will know that you’re not a scammer on the internet.
Tell your story over a series of emails, why you do what you do, and why you want to help them. It will build your reputation, so they will feel that they know, trust and relate to you.
Once you create the relationship, you’re going to start selling. But it’s important to mention that you don’t want to sell in every single email. A good strategy is to sell in about 3 emails and then step back and send value emails.
These value emails can be anything, it can be something that happened to you, something motivational, and even quotes.
This strategy will allow you to sell and continue to build your relationship with your audience at the same time.
When you are selling it’s also important to do it through multiple emails. With multiple emails, you can hit several different points.
A typical selling sequence for a product is to start the first email by creating a need, the second email by introducing the affiliate product that solves that need, and the third email focus just on selling the product.
The fourth and last email is typically a tip over the edge, it can be bonuses or additional training, the goal is to sweeten the pot for the people who are still unsure.
And then, after the selling sequence, you come back to emails with only value.
